American Cancer Society Relay For Life Wall of Hope

On September 19-20, in Washington, D.C., the signatures of millions of Americans will be compiled into the Wall of Hope monument on the National Mall. The Society’s Wall of Hope, made up of 5,000 individual banners representing as many local communities, with an estimated three million signatures, will urge Congress to make cancer a national priority!

The banners are hot off the presses and already making their way across the country for signatures. In Indiana, a Wall of Hop event took place in January at the University Bookstore at Purdue University.

In just a few hours, more than 400 people signed the banner. The owner of the store was so excited, he asked if he could host the banner another full week!

Another amazing Wall of Hope story is from Baldwin County, Alabama, a town on the Gulf Coast, hit by major hurricanes in the past two years.

At their Relay For Life event back in November 2005 the very first Wall of Hope in the Mid-South Division was signed by Relayers who are making their voices heard!

Congratulations to the Great Lakes and Mid-South Divisions and all of your volunteers for making these Wall of Hope events such successes.

Wall of Hope Fun Facts

Each banner will represent:

  • 1 Community
  • 2 local sponsors
  • 3 national sponsors
  • HUNDREDS of signatures

The Wall of Hope monument will be built on the National Mall in Washington D.C. on a plot of land that spans FOUR city blocks.

If all of our 5,000 banners were placed side-by-side, our Wall of Hope monument would span NINE miles—85 times the length of the Washington Monument!
