Event Goals & Objectives

  1. To unveil the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).

Celebration on the Hill PhotoCelebration on the Hill will be the ideal backdrop for the relaunch of ACS CAN, introducing this highly effective grassroots advocacy organization to Members of Congress and all of Capitol Hill.

  1. To advance the position of the American Cancer Society and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.

Celebration on the Hill PhotoCelebration on the Hill 2002 played a key role in helping Members of Congress and their staffs understand what the American Cancer Society is truly about.

It is not just about research and advocacy, it is about real people all over America being impacted by cancer. This year, we will make it very clear what Congress can and should do to help reduce the impact of cancer and ensure that all Americans have access to the cancer care they need.

  1. To advance our legislative agenda in 2005, 92 Senators and 280 Members of Congress signed a letter to the President in support of the Administration's goal of eliminating suffering and death due to cancer by the year 2015.

Celebration on the Hill Photo, Dr. John Seffrin (on the right)The American Cancer Society's federal agenda for 2006 sets forth specific action items that can be taken now to put the country on track toward this goal.

  1. To demonstrate that the advocacy efforts of American Cancer Society and Relay For Life volunteers are making a difference in the fight against cancer in communities across America.

Celebration on the Hill PhotoThe advocacy efforts by Relay For Life and other American Cancer Society volunteers have already led to thousands of communities going smoke-free, increased access to cancer screenings and treatments and billions of dollars in cancer research funding.

Celebration on the Hill PhotoThe results of these and other efforts can be seen in the fact that the American Cancer Society announced that, for the first time in the 70 years of tracking cancer data, the actual number of cancer deaths is declining. However, with more than 560,000 people expected to die of cancer each year, there is still much work to be done.
